Let'sTake a "Trip"

A Trip in Jazz.
Inspired from a Blog Post by CLAUDIA ...
in dVerse, Gay is asking for a poem topic,
"something" about jazz.

Thanks, Claudia

Wow, what a trip!
...enjoyed the ride,
and all the while
playing the tones
--and the deep notes

whew--I love jazz,
remembring when I'd
trouble myself,
try to pick out the tune,
unknowing that just to
let it be happening
is best.

Alas! The beat,
mental gymnastics,
intricate "tonguing"
...scaling heights
then drowning in it all.

Feels like never
will touch ground again,
feet...but finally all
settle into nice, warm,
fuzzy happy again.

Jazz, Love, I've always known
same could be played again,
but never retrieved as before
--being ever a new score,

spontaneous imitations
improvisations
which at once
chill, thrill, "kill".

Jazz, you ghost!
Continually haunting my house,
you keep me
lovingly addicted...

  1. Very cool poem, Steve. I am always impressed with the 'spontaneous imittions, improvisations' that happen in jazz, the way music is played just a slight bit different every time. You've evoked the experience of jazz well, and I can feel your love for it strongly.

  9. Hi Ho STEVERONI - maybeit'sjustme but I think this is my favorite poem of yours EVER! You did it, you said it; defined it, refined it; scaled it and sailed it. IT WAS AWESOME!

  10. Steve, this was one hot tamale! Just to console you on the improv, I'm an old jazzer and know that all of Ella's scat, etc., was to a large extent rehearsed. It doesn't really come out of thin air - the greats all practiced their riffs all over the place...

Having said that, I loved this. May jazz continue to haunt your house, pressing you forward! Amy

  13. Ah, how true:
    I've always known
    same could be played again,
    but never retrieved as before
I am a public speaker/trainer and I certainly rehearse things (even jokes), but I can never completely reproduce the same thing twice. So, while it may not be 100% improvisation, there is always that live chance element there, taking us beyond ourselves!

  14. Yes, analyzing kills it. Still, it is always tempting to try and unravel things. I know sod all about jazz, but this felt jazzy.

    1. That's what my "friends" called me when I repeated 2nd grade grammar school: MUSCLE BRAIN! I took it as a compliment, which made them laugh all the more.

  20. The same with me. Playing is even more freedom of earth bondage. When I am playing, especially these days, all outside of the focus on music making is not relevant.
No care, no worry, no consideration. Just lost in the activity. Spiritually so.
    PEACE and LIGHT!

  21. Jazz is madness..
in good way. It evokes so many emotions..

loved the painting.. it was equally evocative.

  22. Wonderful...I love jazz, too...all kinds. Spent five years in New Orleans nearly fifty years ago, for nursing school and a couple of years after...so I really got into Dixieland jazz for awhile. Over the years since, I've grown to love many other forms of jazz. It is eternal music, I think.

Am in India for six months so I don't hear much jazz here...just Bollywood tunes, chants and the like!!

    1. Only been to New Orleans twice, each time with Cincinnati Symphony on tour.
Got away from downtown, and almost got beat up during a fight in a Cajan bar.
Over a girl, no less. Lesson: when in foreign land, tread carefully.

U-tube has loads of free jazz, if ya ever wanna hear some, and then go away...
