YA NEVER KNOW

For Open Link Night, week #93 at dVerse Poets Pub
Postings begin Tuesday at 3 PM EST

EDNA WAS A BIKER-GIRL!

 A TOY CAN TAKE YOU
ANYWHERE

Picture age four, a little boy
to whom Santa brought a toy
fiddle. Word rhymed with
diddle, as in "Hey Diddle, Diddle
The Cat and His Fiddle...
cow jumped over the moon, and
dish ran away with the spoon..."

I positively hated the violin
Hated my mother--a sin--
which led to many years
of torture, tears and fears.

SKIP from age 4 to 75
Hardly a man is now alive...?*

In nursing home a violin plays--
and it is ME, some days!
Playing for the old folks,
conjuring maybe a memory.

Smallest old lady (Edna) in wheelchair bent
over, as if God might send for her
that very afternoon. Eyes closed, nothing
moved...soundless room...just we two
alone (with about 40 others!), me
on floor, kneeling so I might see her face
and she, restrained with a brace, still in
mode of sightlessness.

I said to The Spirit--"What shall I play?"
Floated out from my violin that day, a
favorite "Ave Maria" which would say
most honest truth known, to Edna,
new Friend, most smallest lady--who
opened her blues, squinted at me.

As we "connected" I saw a tear--only one,
roll down beautiful age-pruned place
along that creek where nose meets face.
What Utter joy--HOLY JOY I felt, as
her joyful memory-tears followed the one...

Thank You, God the Father
and Thank You, my Mother
for Gifts you both gave me that day,
Gifts for me to now give away......

As nursing aide rolled her away, I felt something taken from me.
Several days later, she was in heaven with her real Sancta Marie.
A nurse had whispered,
"We wondered if she would ever again
look out from her head bent there...
whether might once more shed a tear."

LAGNIAPPE:

...and every now and then, finding myself in a dark alley of life

I remember that day
and ask Edna to pray
for me.

POEM

Cedar Waxwings

A POEM

Sought in vain and always--
that language universal
Peeps acting this drama, life,
not understanding, no rehearsal.

Yet, “What a Wonderful World”
everyone sings, knows, that
smiling and shaking of hands;
(even if from other lands!)

Singing, saying
"How d'ya do!”
In truth, saying
 "I LOVE YOU!”

Lo and behold,
verses of the poet!
On refrain be told in
music's sweetest melody

Words:
what's right, not wrong
with the world I see
in you, Peep
--and me.

Above,
a duet: Two birds,
of LOVE forever warbling
when high noon
meets full moon.

We sing,
praising.
We pray
and say

"Trust, we must--
in God, thine and mine.”
Never ever
let loose of the Vine.

In God we are so entwined,
and safe now, my friend.
Remembering well the beginning,
Knowing only...there is no end

TOUR and MANURE

Written Sept 19, 2011
VIOLIN PLA

FARMS, MUSIC,
AND TRAINS

For violinist in
symphony orchestra
memories accrued

like manure piled
POTENTIAL PILE OF MANURE
outside barn doors
during winter's hibernate

I--remembering
times of both
scenarios:

Six weeks
annual touring
concerts every night
another village
tomorrow

Six months
cows in barn
annual curing
age-old loop.
poop...eat...poop
shovel it, throw it
flowers grow in it

Bringing our art
to Peeps starved.
Living on rails,
train was home
ever we (um!)
roamed...

Meanwhile, back at ranch
cow dung begun it's stench
Who's a'load the spreader?”
Not none o' us”, said
hireds sitting on bench.

Get that guy with his fiddle.
'Bout time he learned to work.”
(they thought I had run away--
not to play, but to shirk,)

So farm waited, shovels
begged be used--
while huddled on train
in cold top-bunk hovel,
this violin player
followed his Muse

DIMENSION OF STEVE

ONE OF MY FAVORITE
SONGS!

Once there were green fields kissed by the sun
Once there were valleys where rivers used to run
Once there were blue skies with white clouds high above
Once they were part of an everlasting love
We were the lovers who strolled through green fields

Green fields are gone now, parched by the sun
Gone from the valleys where rivers used to run
Gone with the cold wind that swept into my heart
Gone with the lovers who let their dreams depart
Where are the green fields that we used to roam

I'll never know what made you run away
How can I keep searching when dark clouds hide the day
I only know there's nothing here for me
Nothing in this wide world, left for me to see

Still I'll keep on waiting until you return
I'll keep on waiting until the day you learn
You can't be happy while your heart's on the roam
You can't be happy until you bring it home
Home to the green fields and me once again

"I'LL BE BACH"--WILL YOU BE BEETHOVEN?

Until Monday, I'll just be dropping in as time permits, to visit your posts. Going to the Atlantic side of Florida (Stuart) for an AA Pow-wow. A learning experience...and FUN! With sober Peeps! What could be a better life? I've lived several--believe me (grin)--and THIS way is by FAR the best. JOY is my wish for you ALL....and PEACE!
Steve E

J.S. Bach was a busy man, composer, father. He composed thousands of works. He was father of 22 children--or was it 28? I forget. So maybe did HE?

But ya gotta admit to "busy"--grin!

So--did Schwarzenegger wish to be a musician?  He said, "I'll be Bach!"

This is my MAN, Ludwig Van Beethoven. The question was asked, "Who wrote Beethoven's great NINTH?" The answer: Beethoven! GAWD, am I ever smart--grin! His quartets and several of his symphonies are, to me, the closest I'll ever be associated--in this life--with near PERFECTION!

What an HONOR God allowed me (and many) to make music, and for 70 years of violin playing, to interpret the creativity of this musical GIANT!  So grateful!

LOVE and PEACE...see you Tuesday morning!

A DAY OF YOUTHFULNESS

GRANDSON AND ME

At eleven we met, walked the beach
Talked to seabirds, my grandson and me

Ate turkey and chicken, bought a newspaper
Checked the cinema, he chose "TRUE GRIT"
My grandson...not me...

We laughed, enjoyed together--man and boy
My grandson, age twelve, six times that--me

After gritting---I mean TRUE GRIT, where else?
A Greek Ice Cream parlor. After dripping Butter Pecan  over both me and grandson...we finished with Turkish Baklava, his 'first time'
Ummmm. Good!

NEXT:
Not me, but Grandson suggested future day together might include
Museum--art or history. He likes to read name of painter/artist and
Discover who they are. REALLY who are they? Not just names, he tells me,
but PEOPLE! I say 'Peeps'. He IS different, this grandchild.

After...we go to his home. Out comes his violin, I break out mine.
We play some duets together, simple pieces. He is only playing nine weeks!
It is fun. It is GOOD. Grandpa and Grandson. Violinists!
I am thrilled!

He asked me about Alcoholics Anonymous--he's only twelve!
I tell him what I know, that without the Twelve Steps of AA
He and I would never have been together this day.
And I cannot describe my feelings, as he hugged me, to say

In a whispering way..."Thank you, Grandpa. Can we do this again?
